4 Tips on Styling the Item You Never Wear
Hello, my lovely reader! I hope your day is going well. When I’m running out of creative style ideas, I pick a random piece of clothing in my closet and try to style a different look with it. That’s what happened with this polka-dot chambray top.
We all have that item in the back of our closets that has been waiting for this opportunity. It’s that item that you only style with that one outfit. Give that outfit a break, and let the beast out of its cage in a different way. My beast was this chambray top and this sequined top. I admit I own two tops that are very similar to this sequined top in a turquoise and gray. Both have rarely seen daylight. That is why I decided to stir up the pot and create an outfit that can finally incorporate two of my closeted beasts.
Now I admit, looking back at these photos I probably would have gone for a less dramatic shoe and a bag that actually matches. But you know what? There are no mistakes in fashion.
Force yourself to wear the item in three different ways.
The best tip I can give you is just forcing yourself to wear it. You only wore that awkward length dress twice but don’t have the heart to give it away yet? No worries, force yourself to style it three different ways this month. You never know, maybe one of the looks will end up being one of your favorites.
Layers are your best friend. Try adding a layer to the look to make the item more comfortable to you.
I’m a sucker for a good layering trick. So pile on different textures, different patterns, or even just clothes themselves. By doing this you may notice that the item pulls the entire outfit together. Even though you’re an adult you can still play dress up!
Mix up the way you think about the item.
For example, button downs can be cardigans or tied around the waist, tank tops can be worn over shirts or peak out underneath shirts, and dresses can be worn as skirts and shirts. There are so many different combinations you can do with wearing a certain item. Think creatively.
Know when it’s time to say goodbye.
This tip doesn’t stop at personal relationships but dives into fashion as well. Let’s face it. We all have items we grow old of. If you’ve tried the three outfits trick and layering trick and still think you might not wear it, it’s time to visit Goodwill or eBay. I’ve been a huge eBay fanatic right now and have been selling things up the wazoo. It’s a great way to get rid of old clothes and make quick cash for some new clothes. If that is too much of a hassle drive to Goodwill and donate your clothes. You’ll be helping a lot of people out and getting rid of that beast. Random eBay Tip: if you grew up with Pokemon cards and still have the time it’s time to go dig them up. They’re worth a ton of money online right now.
As for my chambray and sequin tops, I think they’re going to stay around for some time. I tried out the three wears trick and ended up liking a few of my ideas. But if I don’t wear those outfits or these items in the next three months they might end up on eBay.
How do you try and salvage items you never wear anymore? Let me know in the comments down below.
As always,

Love this casual look! Great tips. I always say that you should be able to style something at least 3 ways.

I do sometimes. I would layer it and try out different combos to see if I can make it work. I would force myself to wear it as well and if I feel awkward or uncomfortable throughout, I know I don’t want that item anymore…. Guess same goes for dating too haha!

I meant force myself to go out on a date with a particular guy. If I cringe or can’t tolerate it the entire time, then he’s not the right one definitely haha!

Hahahah I totally agree! Such a great idea

It is a beautiful casual outfit Logan. You did it right, you should keep trusting your instinct. You know why it works? Earth tones mix properly with complementary colours (green and blue). It gives a twist to the look, especially because the bag is not matchy-matchy. Bonus point for the dots on your shirt that match the paillette of your tee. If you want to glam the look, you could wear leopard shoes (earth tones again). It would add texture to the outfit! You gave pretty good tips. Nice post. -Dominique

Dominique, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words! I’ve been a huge fan of leopard shoes as of lately (literally have been wearing them every day). I wouldn’t have thought to pair them with this outfit! I’m definitely going to try it out. Thank you so much for stopping by!
