Meet Me At The Met

When in doubt, go to the Met. In case I didn’t get enough family time during the Porter-camporee, my lovely cousin came to visit me in this city. We ended up slurping some cocktails at Saku, dancing the night away, and spending all day Saturday exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Personally, I was extremely excited because I’ve been itching to go to the Met but for some reason have never found the time.

Greek and Roman Art

Katherine and I spent most of our time looking at the coins, jewelry, sculptures, and pottery in this sections. I was blown away by the intricate jewelry with so much meaning. For example, one of the pieces featured a Herakles Knot which was thought to have the power to cure all wounds. How cool is that? Personally, I could spend a few more hours in this section reading each and every description.

How to get there: When you walk into the Met go directly to your left.

Modern and Contemporary Art

When I was touring this section, I thought I was being transported back into time and sitting in an art class. There are ton of famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, and so many more. I was so happy to see A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase, and Water Lillies. Trust me, you’re going to want to spend hours in this section!

How to get there: When you walk into the Met go directly up the stars (straight) and then keep going left.

What to Wear To the Met

Since you’re in the city, opt for the comfy pair of shoes that you can’t stop reaching for. I believe we ended up walking 6 or 7 miles this day, which to be honest isn’t that many when it comes to the city. Pack as light as humanly possible. I was able to carry around a water bottle (not pictured) but because of covid there were no working water fountains.

I’ve been on a “safari” aesthetic kick lately so I opted for this thrifted, linen dress with comfy sandals (biased because the company I work for sells them), and a bag that’s been in my life for years. I was definitely comfy in this outfit and felt like it was definitely ~museum appropriate~.

Where to Eat Around the Met

If you want to go to the Met in the early afternoon, I highly recommend you stop at Milano Market before you do so. A 15-minute walk from the Met is the best sandwich shop in the city. I swear this sandwich pops up in my dreams more time than I care to admit. Oh… and the best part? They have this crumb cake that will shake your bones and make you ask for more. Typically I get the Columbo which is a delicious sandwich with cracked pepper turkey, cheddar, cucumbers, tomatoes and this herb mayo on a piece of multigrain bread. The Penrose is a good spot for an easy dinner with gooooood drinks. They have a fabulous list of cocktails and an even better list for craft beer. This place is a great place to start if you want to bop around bars afterward.

Lolita’s Kitchen has a delicious menu filled with some heavenly mexican food. Last time we went, there was an older couple sitting on their balcony and dancing. We cheers to them and gobbled down some epic empanadas.

If you’re looking for something a little bit nicer, head over to Felice. This Tuscan restaurant is sure to bring a smile on your face. The pasta is amazing, wine selection is even better, and dessert will be sure to hit a home run. Perfect for a first date.

Before You Go…

Obviously before you leave the met you need to take the iconic photo at the Met steps. These steps have been photographed a million times over and featured in one of my favorite shows, Gossip Girl. Make sure you get a good one before you head over to one of those restaurants!
