How to Make a Scented Salt Dough Garland

Back in elementary school I remember making scented salt dough ornaments in class. Funny thing is that not only do those ornaments get hung up every year but they actually still smell. Fast forward to 2019, I decided to make a salt dough garland (and one ornament) out of the recipe. Read on to check out how you can make your own (p.s. my Christmas decor will be on the blog next week so be on the look out for that).

Ingredients:

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp ground clove
2 tsp nutmeg
10 drops of orange essential oil (optional)
Toothpick (for creating holes)

How to Make:

Mix all of the dry ingredients first: flour salt, spices.
Slowly add water to the dry ingredients until you have a mixture that looks and feels like pizza dough.
Put a thin layer of flour down on a table and then roll out the dough. Fun fact: I don’t actually have a roller so I used a cup.
Cut dough or roll dough into desired shapes
Place a small hole in each piece so that you can hang it later. A toothpick works wonderfully.
Heat your oven to 170°F and cook them for one hour. After the hour is up flip them and double check that the holes are still intact.
If you want to create a garland, thread a string through the hole one by one. Twine works perfectly.
