How I Keep My Skin Healthy When I Travel

Disclaimer: Her Campus and Clarisonic contacted me to try out Clarisonic products and they personally sent me Clarisonic products to try. Every thought and opinion expressed on Peculiar Porter are entirely mine alone and do not reflect the views or opinions of Clarisonic. These are my own words on how I personally keep my skin healthy.

Travel causes chaos on my skin. With 6+ hour flights, unventilated airports, a change in diet, and lack of sleep there is no wonder why my skin quickly begins wishing death upon me. After my third trip this year, I decided to do something about my terrible skin. It has taken me about three months to figure out the right concoction of products to get me where I am today. So let me take you on a journey on how I found a way to keep my skin healthy while I travel.

Healthy Summer SkinHealthy Summer Skin - Lush

Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin Face Scrub

Vegan. Natural. Cruelty-Free.

When my skin reached its peak of mass chaos, I decided to march myself over to Lush where I met the nicest employee. I told her about my struggles with my skin… which is an oily, dry combination to the max. My t-zone is oily while my cheeks and chin are painfully dry, which often leaves me perplexed on what the heck kind of product I should be using. When I get acne, it is typically located in the dry areas near my chin and occasionally near my nose. Thankfully, the Lush employee knew exactly what I needed and handed me this gift from heaven: Angels on Bare Skin Face Scrub.

It took a while to get used to Angels on Bare Skin because of the unique application process. You put about a tablespoon worth of dry product in your hand and mix in a smidge of water. When you mix in the water, it transforms into a soft paste for your face. You then put it on your face and rub it in with a circular motion. The only thing I don’t love about this product is that the lavender is incredibly strong. I’m not the biggest lavender fan so I was thinking about trying Aqua Marina instead because it has my favorite scent patchouli mixed into it. If you are a big lavender fan and have combination or difficult skin, this is definitely the product for you. It’s been a lifesaver for keeping my skin healthy during my long trips.

Healthy Summer Skin - The Body Shop

The Body Shop’s Drops of Youth Eye Concentrate

Vegan. Ethically Sourced. Cruelty-Free.

Dark circles are something that I’ve talked about on my blog for a while now. I’ve been able to find products along the way to help reduce my appearance of under eye circles like I tried in this post. I was looking for a product to replace my All About Eyes from Clinique because I found out Clinique tests on animals. When I was researching cruelty-free brands The Body Shop was one of the first companies to come up, which is exactly how I stumbled upon their Drops of Youth Eye Concentrate. I had another incredible pleasant experience with the employee who helped me as I wandered the little store for a good 40 minutes. Since I’m always traveling, he recommended I try the serum in a travel bottle. The travel bottle comes with the serum in a bottle and a small metal roller ball applicator. After using it for about two weeks, I noticed the pigment in my under eye circles drastically improve. Now, my dark circles will most likely always be there, but having that little color improve is something that instantly made me more confident so thank you Body Shop… keep doing you!Healthy Summer Skin - ClarisonicHealthy Summer Skin - Clarisonic

Clarisonic’s Mia and Pore & Blemish Cleanser

Cruelty-Free.*

I’ve wanted a Clarisonic ever since I saw one demoed at a Sephora years ago. So when Clarisonic reached out to me to test out their products, I couldn’t jump on the opportunity fast enough. When the box arrived, I ripped open the package in pure delight. They sent me Clarisonic Mia 1 Device + Cleansing Brush Head, The Acne Brush Head and Pore & Blemish Gel Cleanser. Talk about spoiled!

I swear, this device is like the nectar of the gods. Forget facemasks, (well, okay I can’t really because they’re incredibly soothing and smell like chai lattés and fudge) this thing is like going to the spa every morning and night. The brush head moves back-and-forth over 300 times a second… I can’t even think about burritos 300 times a second so I’m already impressed. Even though the brush head moves back-and-forth so much it’s incredibly delicate on your skin. You can put the brush on top of a balloon or an egg and it won’t pop or break… it’ll just become incredibly smooth. All of that was music to my combination-skin’s ears.

Just like everything, it takes time to get perfect skin but Clarisonic recommends using the product for four weeks and you’ll see an incredible difference. The first week you use Mia your skin will feel smoother, softer and more refreshed. The second week your skin will start to even out and you’ll get an evener skin tone. Lastly, in four weeks your pores will actually look smaller and your skin will feel firm, which means say buh-bye to wrinkles and hello to a youthful glow. I’ve been using this product for three weeks and I’ve already started to notice firmer skin and smaller pores.

If you’ve always wanted to get a Clarisonic but never knew when the right time to get one the time is now! You can use the code HERCAMPUS to get 15% off all Clarisonic’s products now through July 15.

*Clarisonic is owned by L’Oréal and 1989 L’Oréal completely ceased testing its products on animals. Today, L’Oréal no longer tests its ingredients on animals and no longer tolerates any exception to this rule. Healthy Summer Skin - Shea Moisture

Shea Moisture Sensitive Skin Facial Moisturizer

Cruelty-Free. Certified B Corporation. Fair Trade. Organic. Natural.

Can you believe that list? Yeah, either can I. Shea Moisture is such an incredible company that really knows how to help other communities. They donate 10% of their sales to go to women-led businesses, to support communities that supply ingredients for their products, or to support the Sofi Tucker Foundation. So you can skin feel great while you’re supporting other communties… it’s a win-win.

After I finish cleaning my skin with all the products above, I put on this moisturizer on my problem areas and it does it’s magic overnight. I love this non-greasy formula that smells like a fresh bouquet of flowers. When you put it on, it instantly soothes your skin and helps protect it because of the vitamins and antioxidants incorporated in the formula. If you get dry skin, I would definitely recommend this product.
