Aromatherapy: Bath and Body Works Haul

My name is Logan Porter… and I have a problem. I’m addicted to Bath and Body Works candles. Addicted isn’t even the right word… I’m obsessed. I have over 30 different candles from Bath and Body works, and I have no intention to stop buying them. With that said, I have never fallen harder for the two candles I’m about to share. I literally can’t stop shoving my nose in their paths. I’m intrusive, rude, and above all in love with these scents.

IMG_5474.jpg

Rosewater and Ivy

Fragrance Notes: Soft Rose Petals, English Ivy, Soft Musk… happy tears from angels.

What it Smells Like: Coming home from a long day of work to find fresh cut flowers on your clean, kitchen table. You then go upstairs to take a long bubble bath and melt away every trouble that has ever entered your mind.

I fully admit that the reason I picked up this candle was because of it’s beautiful “marble” casing. I loved the soft pink on the granite and the beautiful label. No judgment, I already admitted I had issues. After cramming my nose in the white wax, I fell hard. I crawled up the candle in my tired, shopped-out arms and carried on to find an equally great candle. And that is when it happened…

IMG_5472.jpgIMG_5482.jpg

Comfort: Vanilla and Patchouli with Natural Essential Oils

Fragrance Notes: Vanilla Absolute and Patchouli Oil

What it Smells Like: Being embraced by a loved one you haven’t seen in a long time. You then wrap up in an enormous, fuzzy blanket and watch your favorite Netflix show for the next four hours.

This scent is the reason I thought it was the utmost importance that I shared this little haul with you. After lighting the candle for a quick hour, I started putting the entire line in my online shopping cart (a habit I am too accustomed to doing).

I’m obsessed with this beautiful, rich smell that makes my crazy mind feel at ease. The point of these two fragrances being added together is because the vanilla is supposed to bring a calming to the mind to encourage relaxation while the patchouli oil creates a sense of harmony. They really were not kidding when they said that “comfort” was going to enter your home with this candle. I feel like I’m being hugged by God himself.

As for the body scrub… I’m typically not the biggest fan of body scrubs just because most tend to be too harsh on my skin. After trying this scrub, I take it all back. I’m a huge fan… call me a fangirl if you must. The scrub is made of walnut shells and vitamin E to smooth and soften your skin and it smells like a dream come true. The best part about it is it doesn’t leave that sticky-just-washed skin feeling. Instead, your skin feels like silk that has just been spun. The smell itself is actually the reason I spent the past hour looking for perfumes that smell like this. Sadly, until Bath and Body Works makes a perfume I’m ‘stuck’ with their lotions, creams, scrubs, soaps, and more. Fingers crossed that they hear my cry.

P.S. if you’re looking for a fantastic quick gift they make a gift set of Comfort’s lotion and body wash. Trying my hardest not to buy it for myself right now.

By the way, do yourself a favor and check out Comfort… it’s worth it I promise.

Half United: Sustainable Fashion that Gives Back

I hope your day is going wonderfully. The holiday season has been on my mind all week. I even filmed a holiday video for work on Tuesday. With that said, I wanted to talk about a great gift that not only is cute but gives back. The last time I was in Albany, I stumbled upon La Luce Boutique. It was an adorable shop filled with sustainable fashion projects and they even had products from few companies I talked about last year. I was thrilled to find a Half United necklace hanging in all its glory. When I saw it, I knew I had to have it.

The idea behind Half United is that customers are doing their half by uniting together to make a lasting change in children’s lives. Each product has seven meals built into the cost. These meals go to children in the USA, Haiti, Fiji, and Cambodia. After every three months, Half United divides the funds into four charity partners.

The partners and locations explained in more detail:

USA: Helps implement farming programs into schools. This allows meals to be packed for the hungry, food to be planted, and community gardens maintained. Half United works with the local communities to help improve daily lives.

Haiti: Each beaded item from Half United is supporting the livelihood and well being of artisans in Haiti. Each beaded item is created by men and women in Papillon. The beaded item is then hand-signed and completely unique.

Fiji: The funds sent to Fiji go towards supporting sustainable, thriving feeding projects at the “NCTC” primary school. Half United has funded sweet potato farms, student garden projects, honeybee farms, chicken coops, and more.

Cambodia: Half United has teamed up with the EAI orphanage in Phnom, Penh Cambodia. EAI focuses on empowering children emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Half United sells different products ranging from slogan tees to jewelry. One item they sell the most is the necklace I’m picturing in this post. The necklace is made out of a recycled bullet casing to represent the fight against hunger. Every time a customer purchases a ‘Fighting Hunter’ necklace, they are peacefully fighting hunger all over the world by providing seven meals to a child in need. Personally, I love this idea of using something that is usually aggressive and harsh and showing it used in a way that can help others. Plus, Half United is recycling metal that would otherwise be thrown away.

This holiday season, when you’re filling up your bellies and dragging yourself out to the madness of Black Friday, think about how you could help others with your gifts. Be on the lookout next week for a full list of sustainable fashion that gives back to communities in need. Afterall, isn’t part of the holiday season helping others? I’ll also be showing how I style this necklace soon.

What do you think about Half United? What do you think about wearing a bullet casing? Let me know in the comments down below.

The Giving Keys

Hello friend! Hope your week is going well! I had a busy weekend in Boston. Tomorrow will be traveling to New York City for a Copywriter’s workshop. I’m very excited to see what kind of skills they will be highlighting.

Packing for New York City got me thinking about the necklace I constantly put on. You may have noticed this dainty necklace in many of my outfit of the day posts. For example, here are four of my most recent outfits where I wore this necklace:

Outfit 1, Outfit 2, Outfit 3, Outfit 4

This necklace is from The Giving Keys, a small company based in Los Angeles. The Giving Keys is a pay it forward company that employees people who are transitioning out of homelessness. They live with a three-word philosophy: dream, create, and inspire.

Each key is labeled with words such as, “dream”, “believe”, “brave”, “hope”, “let go”, and “love.” These words are meant to be a reminder that you can carry with you throughout your daily life. Personally, I decided to pick a small, tiny necklace that reads “dream.” I picked this word because I believe that one day I will be able to make an impact in this world whether that be through my words or my actions. I want to dream of endless opportunities and situations where I can achieve that goal. Wearing this necklace is a constant reminder to make an impact on today, tomorrow, and all the days to come. It’s a touch of inspiration every day.

They have many necklaces and some are a little bit more of an eye-catching statement. I personally want a big silver necklace like the necklace one or the exact same necklace I have in silver. Some of my personal favorites that I’ve been eyeing are the following:

Necklace 1, Necklace 2, Necklace 3

As you may have noticed, I’m starting to write more about pay it forward companies that help other people in their daily lives. I recently did a post on socially conscious tees and want to continue bringing this idea into the fashion world. Fashion can be so much deeper than a pretty pair of clothes or jewelry. With the right plan or idea you can help so many different people just as The Giving Keys. I hope to take you on my journey of finding more and more products that help give people opportunities to thrive in this world.

What is your opinion on companies that pay it forward? Do you know any companies in mind I should look into? Let me know in the comments down below.

P.S. Dream on.

12 Netflix Shows You Need to Watch This Fall

It is finally that perfect time of the year where you can crawl underneath the covers and no one will judge you. Okay, maybe they will but I certainly won’t. After I get home from work I do one of three things… I go to the gym, work on my blog, or I watch Netflix. I’m a junky when it comes to a good, mindless show. With that said, I’m a notorious binge watcher so if you have any other shows for me to watch let me know in the comments down below. For now, these are my top 12 Netflix shows.

Drama

Instead of just listing my favorite episodes I figured I’d give them a rating for the plot, characters, and style. The ranking is from 1-10, 10 being the best score.

Scandal: Plot 10, characters 9, style 10.

If political drama with a strong woman is your thing… this show is definitely for you. My brother’s girlfriend and I would DVR the episodes and watch them together when we both had time. Olivia Pope is a strong character who fixes political scandals from top political.  This insane show will make you think about how corrupt politics can be.

Thirteen Reasons Why: Plot 10, characters 10, style 6.

When I was in high school, I wrote a book report on Thirteen Reasons Why. I was reluctant to watch the series because I was worried they were going to misconstrue the idea of suicide. Luckily, the screenwriters did an incredible job that pointed out all of the different layers that come with suicide. This show should definitely be watched with hesitation for some, but it can be an extreme eyeopener for others.

How to Get Away with Murder: Plot 10, characters 9, style 7.

If you guys read my podcast post then you probably predicted murder coming up on this list. The plot of this show keeps you on your toes with every twist and turn. This extremely intense college course pushes five college students to their breaking point. The series shows the twisted idea that anyone can be turned in to a villain.

Gossip Girl: Plot 10, characters 10, style 10.

I’m not someone who watches shows more than once because it will not hold my attention long enough. With that said, I’ve watched this series three times. That is how brilliant this show is. The series shows a dramatic hierarchy the elite classes in New York City. Each character has an insane personality that has many, many layers. The screenwriters, cast, and costume designers did an incredible job creating a series that captivates the audience with every plot.

Grey’s Anatomy: Plot 9, characters 9, style 4 (doesn’t apply).

You best believe a Shonda Rhymes series is on here three times. I grew up watching Grey’s Anatomy with my mom on Thursday nights. That was when I was in fifth grade. Looking back, some of the content was probably not suitable for a fifth grader, but nonetheless, I loved watching this epic, medical drama. The only reason I did not give the character section a perfect score is because my favorite characters keep dying. I’m a little bitter about that. Warning: this show will make you ball your eyes out.

The 100: Plot 9, characters 10, style/costumes 10.

Out of every show listed on this list, this is by far my favorite. I usually like shows where I can mindlessly look and listen to while I play on my phone. With that said, this show is definitely not one where you can play on your phone during the episodes. Every episode that comes out I’m on the edge of my seat. The characters in this show are put into situations where I don’t even know how I would react. For people who like Game of Thrones, I think you would fall hard for this sci-fi drama.

Vampire Diaries: Plot 8, characters 10, style/costumes 8.

Who doesn’t love a weird, sci-fi movie? This show is definitely intended for high school students during the Twilight movie craze. Regardless, I somehow was sucked into this world recently. I’m on the second season and I like it so far. I oddly like the different plot line. Plus, this show is getting me in the festive mood for Halloween.

Comedy

Comedy isn’t my favorite thing to watch only because I weirdly like crying when I watch shows. With that said, I’m going to include the category “comedy” to show how funny the jokes are.

Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce: Plot 8, comedy 9, characters 9, style 10.

I’ve never felt so uncomfortable watching a main character. This is probably the only show where you can find me cringing at how awkward and selfish the main character acts. However, I love the friend dynamic in this show because the girls really pull each other up during difficult times. I’ve never been in a divorce but I could still relate to the characters’ struggles.

Shameless: Plot 10, comedy 9, characters 10, style 3.

If you had to watch one show on this comedy list, watch this one. You’ll be glued to the screen. The humor is pretty vulgar but if you can get past that you’ll love this show. The characters are so honest and true that you can’t help but love them. Plus, there are some crazy plot twists in this show.

Friends from College: Plot 7, comedy 9, characters 10, style 10.

I really liked this show in the beginning but towards the end the plot was very repetitive. It has characters like Keegan-Michael Key and Cobie Smulders so you know each joke is delivered perfectly. This show is perfect for a great laugh but not perfect for a good plot.

Parks and Rec: Plot 9, comedy 10, characters 10, style 7.

The dynamic of characters in this show is fantastic. Leslie Knope always tries to brighten up everyone’s day with her weird mix of words and happy attitude. If I had to transform into any character it would be Leslie because of how optimistic and persistent she is. Watch this show and you’ll be blissfully happy.

Orange is the New Black: Plot 10, comedy 8, characters 10, style (doesn’t apply).

Like Shameless, this show is a little vulgar. The jokes are pretty cruel but the characters are so great that you’ll forget. I particularly liked this show because it is set in a different scenery than other shows. Even though the characters are criminals you can’t help but love them and feel bad for them. The screen writers did a fantastic job making the characters relatable.

What show on Netflix is your favorite? Let me know in the comments down below.

BootayBag Review

Disclaimer: BootayBag contacted me to try out their subscription service. They personally sent me October’s package. Every thought and opinion expressed on Peculiar Porter are entirely mine alone and do not reflect the views or opinions of BootayBag.

Subscriptions are like getting little presents in the mail. I’m a huge fan of online shopping simply because I love getting mail. BootayBag reached out to me recently and asked if they could send me a month subscription to their underwear service. When they messaged me, I admit I was a little hesitant. I was worried that it would make my blog cross too far to an unknown territory. But, the more I thought about it and the more I researched the company, I decided why not. After all, we all wear underwear so why not talk about it?

IMG_4669IMG_4694

BootayBag is a subscription service that sends two pairs of underwear straight to your door for $12. Nothing makes me feel better than a new pair of underwear, so I decided why not try it out. I’m a big fan of underwear. With that said, I’m also a huge critic. I hate when underwear slips and slides underneath a cute pair of pants. I usually hate having a harsh elastic on my underwear, but I became very found of the elastic on the pink pair. I love that it doesn’t roll up like other pairs of underwear. Plus, the band was much thicker than their underwear. I also loved the silky material and intricate floral pattern on the purple pair.

Personalized underwear selection: Always thongs, never thongs, and mix it up.

If you’re someone who always wears a particular style you have the option to pick between always thongs, never thongs, and a mixture of both. Since I was curious about both sides, I opted for the mix it up option. I liked getting pairs I wouldn’t normally reach for, something only a subscription service can offer.

If you post a picture of BootayBag on Instagram and hashtag it #undermatters, BootayBag will donate $1 to charity. (The charity switches every month).

Now the average person probably wouldn’t flash their underwear on social media, but BootayBag makes you want to live life on edge. With every Instagram post that is posted with #undermatters they’ll donate $1 to charity. Last month the profits went towards Houston SPCA and this month the money will be going towards breast cancer research and education.

IMG_4686IMG_4675

Would I buy them on my own?

Bottom line: yes. I love the idea of getting new, updated underwear delivered to your home. It’s like two days out of every month where you know you’re going to feel g-o-o-d. Plus, you might end up with a pair you wouldn’t normally reach for so you get to try out something different.

Fall Nail Polish Essentials

Fine, I give up. I’m obsessed with painting my nails. Everyone has their little tick and this one is mine. I can picture my roommates and close friends fist pumping in the air like John Bender in the Breakfast Club. I finally admitted it. For those who don’t know, I paint my nails on average 2-3 times a week… sometimes more depending how stressed I am. I admit, its a pretty sick obsession. As soon as I see one little chip of nail polish that just doesn’t look quite alright… the rest of the polish will come off. I mean, I never said I was perfect.

As a result of my sick obsession, you can be sure that I’m always on the hunt for a good polish. I’m normally a strict OPI girl, but after one shade from Essie caught my eye I decided to expand my horizon. CVS was having a great deal at the time that was buy three get one free. Normally, I’d just shop through TJ.Maxx or Marshall’s and find a discounted polish, but I was itching for a splurge session.

Fall Nail EssentialsFall Nail Essentials

After picking up multiple nail polishes and putting them back, I decided on Petal Pushers, Winning Streak, Angora Cardi, and Barre with Me. I would love to meet the person who designs names for nail polishes. If you’re ever lacking inspiration for an Instagram caption go to the OPI or Essie website for some inspiration. Trust me, they’re literal geniuses.

Petal Pushers: If you’re not getting the biker gang vibe from the name just picture yourself wearing this color riding a bike through crisp, fallen leaves. Okay, so maybe I’m the only one that thinks that kind of stuff when I buy nail polish but whatever. This color is great due to being a lighter version of an otherwise dark color.

Winning Streak: This color is my cup of tea. I’m a big fan of rich, dark colors like this one. It is the perfect mix of purple and grey to create this eery color perfect for Halloween.

Angora Cardi: This is my go to if I’m going for something a little daring on my nails. I’m not a huge fan of bright red colors on my nails because my nails so tiny, but I love this mix of purple, grey, and pink. It’s bold enough to say “oh, hello” but calm enough to be like yeah-please-leave-me-alone. My kind of polish.

Barre with Me: The name on this one got me because I recently tried barre and it was the definition of d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r. During the routine, I felt like I was going to die and I was sore for days later. Regardless of the near death experience, I fell in love with this color. I normally don’t go for light colors but this color was the perfect mix of nudes and feminine pinks. I’ve been wearing this color the most out of the four.

July Favorites 2017

Hello darlings! Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit! I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard this weird superstition, but I was told that you’re supposed to say rabbit three times on the first of every month. Try it out, I swear it’s good luck! So back to this post, I haven’t done a monthly favorites in such a lo-o-o-o-o-o-ng time. Since I’ve been trying a lot of new things out, I thought I’d give it a try.

IMG_2724IMG_2728

Beauty

Face mask: I usually do a face mask once a week because a girl needs a little r-e-l-a-x-a-t-i-o-n if you ask me. I was very curious about sheet masks so I purchased this Korean face mask pack from T.J.Maxx. The box came with five different masks that make you look like a scary monster for about 25-30 minutes. The directions recommend leaving the liquid on your face after you take off the mask so that it sinks into your pours. I wasn’t about that life, so I just washed my face after. I’m a fan of this because it really rejuvenated my skin after I had sun burn. I would buy it again.

Dry Shampoo: Go buy this now. No, literally. Hop in your car and drive to CVS. You’ll thank me as soon as you smell this cucumber and green tea dry shampoo. I’ve been trying (very hard) to not wash my hair as frequently. Typically, I wash my hair every day (please don’t scream at your computer, I know it is bad). This dry shampoo has really been helping me ease into the process of being a dirty, grease ball. I highly recommend this.

Yes to: This was another product I found wandering around T.J.Maxx. Honestly, no sponsor needed, these two products have drastically changed my skin’s completion. I feel so much more confident not wearing make up because how it evened out my skin. I would buy this a thousand times.

Eyebrow Pencil: Okay, I’m about to get super personal. Are you ready for this? I’m 22-years-old and I’ve never owned an eyebrow pencil. I’ve never really felt the need to get one. I would sometimes fill out my eyebrows with light eyeshadow if I felt it was appropriate. I definitely like this it cosmetics eye pencil, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it. I know the make up bloggers are screaming at their computers right now. I’m sorry!

July 2017 Favorites

Fashion

Braceletes: I’ve been really liking this combination of bracelets. They’re really interesting because I received them all at different special times. The Tiffany peace bracelet was given to me as a high school graduation present, the middle Alex and Ani bracelet was given to me at my college graduation, and the top manta bracelet was given to me by one of my best friends for our college graduation. The mantra bracelet stating “live what you love” really speaks to me because my friends and I are all going on this path where we’re trying to find out what makes us happy as adults. It is a constant reminder that we’re not working for money but instead working for something that we really enjoy. I know many students come out of college with the mindset that they just want to make a ton of money and don’t care about actually enjoying their job. I feel the complete opposite. I just want to love what I do.

Perfume: While I was cleaning my room, I found 20+ mini perfumes. So I’ve been trying a new scent every day and so far I’m really digging these three.

July Favorites 2017

Technology

Cacti phone case: Okay so obviously by the three pictures surrounding this text you might think I have a light blue-green vibe going on. You’re totally right. For the longest time I’ve been obsessed with cacti. It’s just something about how sassy they are. So when my other cacti phone case broke, I obviously had to get another. This wonderful case came in the mail yesterday. (I actually bought the bigger one by accident but thankfully amazon is w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l when it comes to returns.)

Personal

Project: My big project this month was redecorating my room so it would have more of an adult vibe. Since I’ll be commuting to work from my home for the next two years, I decided I needed a more responsible color. My room was this hot pink color that swallowed up the room and made it look like I was living in a candy box.  If you follow me on Pinterest, you probably saw my plethora of room decor pictures. I ended up going to home depot and collected a book worth of paint samples. I finally decided on First Rain. Expect a room tour post very soon (I’m just waiting on a mini rug to come in from amazon).

Girl on the Train: I just purchased this book from Amazon last week. I’m so excited to crack the spine open and start reading. Let me know if you’ve ever read it before!

Three songs I’m totally into right now:

Podcast I’m listening to on the way to work:

  • Anna Faris is Unqualified. For the love of all humanity: listen, cry, laugh, smile, scream… you’ll do it all listening to this podcast.

Events

Her Campus: Honestly, I’m incredibly sad I didn’t take this opportunity earlier in college. I think it is definitely an event that anyone who wants a great job/life one day should go and see.

Fourth of July: I was lucky enough to spend Fourth of July weekend at with my boyfriend. We did a good amount of fishing, laughing, and swimming. What more could you want in the summer? We also were able to check out Lavender by the Bay, which is definitely a must see attraction if you ever visit the North Fork of Long Island.

What do you think about these types of posts? Since I haven’t done them in so long, I’m not sure if people really want to see the weird items I’m trying out. Let me know what you think about monthly favorites, if you have any ideas on what I should post about, or even have any questions. I’d be all ears.
