DIY Thrifted Wrap Skirt (Resizing)

I’ve been a thrifting monster lately. Every chance I can, I wander over to a Goodwill and lurk on row after row. Eventually, I find something too big, too small, or something just right (hello, Goldilocks). This week, I found this incredible plaid wrap skirt. The dilemma I soon faced was that it was three sizes too big. Instead of putting it back on the rack… I decided to pull out my scissors, thread, and needle and get to work (in case you’re worried, I waited until I was home to perform surgery). So how do you resize a thrifted wrap skirt? Read on to find out…

Step One: Measure it Out

Since you’re performing surgery on a wrap skirt, you want to make sure you measure it correctly. Wrap the skirt on your body just as if you were going to wear it out. Ignore the buttons and focus on where the button holes line up. Take two bobby pins where the holes line up with the other fabric. This is where the buttons will be relocated.

Step Two: Perform Surgery

After you tried on the skirt and figured out where the buttons will go, carefully take the skirt off. Make sure you leave the bobby pins where you pinned them. Next, you will carefully cut off the buttons and resew them exactly where the bobby pins are placed. After you sew them on you’re good to go! Say goodbye to those three extra sizes!

Bottom Line: Ignore Sizes

I try my hardest not to look at sizes when I try on clothes just because each brand fits differently. For example, my jeans are one size in J.Crew and a completely different in Everlane. So when you’re trying on clothes when you’re thrifting or even in a normal retail store, try to not pay attention to the number but how you feel. Do you love the fabric? Do you love the way it fits? Does it squeeze you in places where it shouldn’t? As women we spend so much time trying to make sure we aren’t a certain size. Don’t be defined by that number… own it.
