6 Ways to Get in the Holiday Spirit

When it comes to the holidays, the Christmas spirit isn’t something my family lacks. We start blasting Christmas music and putting up our eight (yes, you read that right) Christmas trees a week before Thanksgiving. To some, that may be just a smidge too early but to us, it’s just another day in the Porter household. So how do you get in the holiday spirit for the next 7 days? Read on to find out…

6 Ways to Get in the Holiday Spirit

#1 Blast Some Holiday Tunes

My family recently sprinkled Sonos speakers all throughout the house so we can hear joyous Christmas music in every room. There is something about blasting the upbeat songs that instantly gets you in the holiday spirit. Here are some Spotify playlists that I highly recommend:

  • Christmas Hits
  • New Music Holiday
  • Christmas Pop
  • Merry & Bright
  • Christmas Coffeehouse
  • Happy Holidays
  • Christmas Collection

#2 Hang Up Every Corny Ornament

One of the best parts about putting up all of the ornaments you’ve stashed for the other 10 1/2 months of the year. My family loves eyeing all of the cheesy ornaments (like the bean one I made in 1st grade). I also love looking back at all of the ornaments I collected when I studied abroad. My favorite one is from Siena, Italy. It features the painted bell tower I sat in front of every day for lunch.

#3 Participate in Kindmas

Kindmas is the perfect activity to get you in the holiday spirit! I came up with 25 different activities you can participate in to spread the holiday cheer. Today was bringing in treats to work and my coworkers were extremely happy! Check out this post or my Instagram stories to get a daily reminder of what day it is!

#4 Bake Delicious Treats

The best and the worst part of the holiday season is that you’re always offered treats. From candy canes to homemade cookies… they’re all wonderful. Bake something with your family or friends while listening to Christmas music. If that doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit I don’t know what will!

#5 Watch Endless Christmas Movies

When it comes to Christmas movies, we have a select few we constantly watch. The Hallmark channel is consistently playing in the background with all of our favorites. A weird fun fact is that when my Dad’s side came over for Christmas a James Bond marathon was always playing. I think I’ve seen all of the classic ones by now! But if you’re not into James Bond, here are a few Christmas Movies to put on your schedule (don’t forget the popcorn):

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  • The Grinch (have yet to see!)
  • Elf
  • Polar Express
  • Home Alone
  • The Santa Clause
  • Christmas with the Kranks
  • A Christmas Story

#6 Break Out the Family Traditions or Start New Ones

My favorite tradition my family does is breaking out the oplatek, a polish wafer. Each member of the family is given an oplatek to break with other family members. When you break off a piece of someone’s oplatek, you wish them something for the new year and then eat the piece you broke off. The idea is to wish everyone something for the next year. It’s a great time way to tell your loved ones how much you love and care about them. You can read about eight other traditions my family does here.
